Letter from Andrew Jackson Donelson while chargé d'affaires of the United States to the Republic of Texas, written at New Orleans on his return from Texas to General James Taylor of Newport, Ky., referring to Andrew Jackson's association with the Taylor family. The letter was used by James Taylor, cousin of Zachary Taylor, to write to a relative commenting on Donelson's physical appearance, his new position with the government in Washington, and the possibility of Donelson's influence being used to promote two military friends. Taylor also describes his residence at a New Orleans boarding house.

Andrew Jackson Donelson was nephew, ward, and personal secretary to President Andrew Jackson throughout his administration. President John Tyler (1841-1845) appointed him chargé d'affaires of the United States to the Republic of Texas and he was U.S. Minister to Prussia from 1846 to 1849. James Taylor, the son of Col. James Taylor, was born on Apr. 19, 1769 in Caroline County, Virginia. He was educated at Rappahannock Academy.
